Despite what one may think based on my obsessive nerdery around Canadian football, I'm not an especially nationalist or patriotic sort. The custom of playing national anthems before nearly all sporting events strikes me as silly, at best, and normally I just try to patiently wait them out.
But put me in the stands of a Team Canada soccer match, where I can recontextualize the anthem as a club fight song? I'll belt out my badly-accented rendition of the French version of "O Canada" as loudly as I can.
