Below is the text of the regulations for the championship of the Canadian Rugby Union (CRU) for the 1905 season, as printed in Spalding's Athletic Library's Official Canadian Foot Ball Guide for 1905. Note that at the time, the CRU consisted of the Quebec (QRFU), Ontario (ORFU), and Intercollegiate (CIRFU) unions, which each had their own playing rules. As detailed in these regulations, championship matches were to be played with the rules of each competing club's union for one half. Also included is a diagram showing the "Plan of the Field", which is not associated with any particular set of rules but, aside from details of interior markings, is applicable to all three.
I extracted the text from a PDF scan using OCR software, and while I carefully edited the result in an attempt to present these rules verbatim, it is possible there are errors that I missed or inadvertently introduced.
Regulations for the Championship of the Canadian Rugby Union
As Amended January 14, 1905
1.—The championship of the Union shall be contested for annually at such places and dates as the Executive of the Union may appoint. Half time shall be played under the rules of each of the affiliated Unions which the competing teams represent. The length of each game shall be one hour, divided into quarters of fifteen minutes each. Unless otherwise agreed upon by the captains of the competing teams, the first two quarters to be played under the rules selected by the team winning the toss, fifteen minutes each way; and the second half under the rules selected by the team losing the toss, fifteen minutes each way. The team scoring the majority of points in the whole four quarters to be declared the winner. In the case of a tie on the final score, if in the opinion of the referee it is practicable, the teams shall play quarters of five minutes each way in the same manner as herein before mentioned.
2.—The Intermediate Championship of the Union shall be contested for annually under the same rules and regulations as the Championship of the Union. The Intermediate Championship match shall be held in Quebec in the season of 1894, and in succeeding years the match shall alternate between Ontario and Quebec, so that the Senior and Intermediate Final Championship matches shall not be played in the same but in different Provinces in the same year. The Executive has full power to arrange for final games this year (1905) owing to the admission of the Intercollegiate Union.
3.—The Executive of the Union shall provide grounds and attend to other details of Championship matches. The expenses of the traveling teams shall, when possible, be paid pro rata out of the gate receipts. The gate receipts, after deducting all necessary expenses, shall be divided into three equal parts; one part going to each club and one part to this Union, provided that the Union shall have a first charge on the gate receipts of $100.00 and in no case shall the share of the Union exceed $150.00. The Referee, in the event of the competing clubs failing to agree, shall be appointed by the President. The Referee shall not be a member of either of the competing clubs. The President may, if he considers it advisable, appoint two referees, one for each half of the game, according to the rules selected by the teams competing for the Championship.
4.—(a) If either team fail to appear on the grounds ten minutes after the time appointed, without proper cause shown to the Referee, the team present shall be considered to have won the toss, and the Referee shall fine the offenders not less than $10 nor more than $25.
(b) In case of injury to players substitutes shall be allowed in the first half, but not in the second half unless by agreement of the Captains before the match.
5.—(a) The Sceretary shall give, where possible, one month's notice of the date of Championship matches to the Secretaries of the District Unions.
(b) The Secretaries of each of the affiliated Unions must notify the Secretary of the Canadian Union not later than November 1st if his District Union is desirous of playing for the Canadian Championship.
6.—Protests must be in duplicate, signed by the Captain and Secretary of the protesting club. Protests must be in the hands of the Secretary of the Union within sixty hours of the advertised time of the match protested and must be accompanied by a deposit of $25, which sum shall be forfeited to the Union should the Executive disallow the protest. The Secretary of the Union shall immediately forward to the Secretary of the club, against which a protest has been lodged, one of the duplicates of said protest. Protests shall be decided by the Executive at a meeting to be called by the Secretary of the Union immediately upon receipt of the protest, providing the foregoing stipulations have been fulfilled by the protesting club.
7.—No player shall be eligible to play for a club competing for a final Championship game who has played for any other club in the same Union year in the Quebec, Ontario or Canadian Intercollegiate Unions, unless such player has bona fide changed his residence and his playing has then been authorized by the Executive of the Canadian Rugby Union.
8.—No player shall be eligible to play in any match under the auspices of the Union who is not an amateur in good standing according to the following definition:
"An amateur is one who has never competed for a money prize or staked bet, or with or against a professional for any prize, or who has never taught, pursued, assisted or received directly or indirectly any money or its equivalent for services rendered in the practice of athletic exercise as a means of obtaining a livelihood, or who has never entered any competition under a name other than his own."
9.—Alterations to these regulations shall be made only at a general meeting of the Union. Notice of the proposed alterations shall be sent to the Secretary at least two weeks before the meeting, and shall at once be forwarded by him to the members of the Union, and to all delegates entitled to attend.
